The expansion of Japan’s manufacturing activity reduced this month, while the services sphere dropped at a very fast rate coming from May 2020. This is a reflection of the economy’s growing toll from the latest spread of the Corona Virus
The General Effect of COVID-19 on Japan’s Business Economy
Like many countries in Asia, the Corona Virus has affected Japan’s economy. The increase in Delta variant infections compelled the government to prolong and restructure Japan’s fourth state of emergency. This currently includes almost 60% of the citizens, and though it spared the manufacturers the brunt of the pandemic, it has harmed Japan’s services industry.
Manufacturers have generally avoided the effect of the coronavirus comeback, owing primarily to the extremely infectious Delta form, which has made the Japanese governments and other governments in Asia to impose several measures and restrictions.
According to Usamah Bhatti, an economist at IHS Markit, which prepared the report, the negative facts lead to a decline of activities in the total private business sphere. This led to a very fast rate of decline in the private sector since last year. Although orders and exports grew overall, it was at the weakest rate since January.
“The bigger services sector, where business engagements decreased for the 19th straight month, drove the decrease in general private business spehere activity,” Bhatti added.
“Private sector enterprises reported that latest spike in Pandemic cases which is associated with the Delta variant had hampered expectations.”
The seasonally adjusted au Jibun Bank Flash Services PMI index fell to 43.5 from 47.4 the last month, its lowest level since May last year, when the economy was in a severe COVID-19 depression.
The Effect of the Economic Downturn on the Yen
The general downturn in the economy has started to take its toll on the yen. We can expect the yen to trade more on the downside in the coming weeks.
