Scott Morrison, Australian Prime Minister has admitted that he is willing to have a diplomatic dialogue with China. He says he is interested in resolving their differences and restoring the harmonious international relationship between the two countries.
The Dissonance Between Australia and China
Though there has been a strain in their relationship since 2018, the relationship between Australia and China had worsened in 2020. China had been called out by the Australian government and accused of having a role in the COVID-19 pandemic. Morrison’s government also asked that they be properly investigated. In addition, Australia was also involved in criticizing China because of the way it handled the Xinjiang situation. Disagreement
The bad blood then spiraled into the economic relationship between both countries such that there was trade retorsion between them. Australia took the step of setting a high tariff on China’s exports. China then retaliated in equal measure by also setting a high tariff on goods for Australia. There is a particular situation in which an Australian wine had a 200% increase in tariff for 5 years, beginning from March.
Scott Morrison Wants Discrepancy Between Australia and China Settled
Scott Morrison said in an interview before the G7 meeting, that he was considering exploring the World Trade Organization action to settle the discrepancy between the two countries. The Australian Prime Minister further promised to seek help from other leading governments at the G7 meeting.
